Many pursue the field of speech-language pathology to help others.
Compassion is an intrinsic part of “SLP” make-up. Yet, there is a significant education gap
with the understanding of the SLP role in counseling for voice and upper airway clients.
Learning Outcomes
1. To be able to identify two obstacles with behavior change in patients who have a voice or upper airway disorder.
2. To be able to describe two counseling tools for promoting positive patient outcomes in voice therapy.
3. To be able to identify two ways as an SLP to use counseling with patients who have voice and upper airway disorders.

Audience Information
The target audience for this course is speech-language pathologists who seek to increase their knowledge, skills, and confidence in SLP self-care and fostering empathy with counseling for positive patient outcomes.
There is no required prerequisite learning for this course.
This course will be available for ASHA CEUs starting on April 15, 2023.

Kristie is a speech-language pathologist who is driven to break down barriers to learning about voice science. She runs a private practice voice clinic in Fort Worth, Texas where she provides videostroboscopy exams and specialized voice care. She wanted to start the Confident Clinician Cooperative because as a former patient herself, she understands the need for experience to improve patient outcomes, and she wants to empower clinicians to take charge of their skill set and feel confident in voice therapy and beyond.

Cara is a speech-language pathologist who has specialized in voice rehabilitation. She runs a private practice in Tampa, Florida where she provides both comprehensive endoscopic voice and swallow assessments and treatment. She has extensive acute care and outpatient hospital experience, in addition to being a classically trained soprano. Recognizing a paucity of in-depth graduate level voice coursework, Cara cofounded the Confident Clinician Cooperative to assist future and practicing clinicians in accessing voice-specific continuing education for confident clinical practice.

Aaron is a voice-specialized speech-language pathologist who has devoted his career to developing effective and efficient physiologic voice therapy. He has a private practice in Portland, Oregon where he provides in-person and online habilitation and rehabilitation services for voice. He co-founded the Confident Clinician Cooperative because he wanted clinicians to feel confident in their knowledge and skills to support patients with voice differences and voice disorders. Aaron draws from his background in theater, singing, and languages in addition to his experience in clinic, research, and education as he helps clinicians achieve effective and efficient outcomes with their patients.

Ms. Gross is a licensed speech pathologist and vocal coach, with a specialization in voice and fluency. She has extensive experience and a passion for working with the gender diverse population, professional voice users, and people who stutter. Her clinical style is holistic and client centered. Beyond speech pathology training, she has over twenty years of vocal performance experience and ten years of vocal coaching experience, with results being immediately applicable to her speech therapy practice. She aspires to free her clients by freeing their voices.

Professional Counselor
Certificate in Massage Therapy
Dr. Renee Baker is a licensed professional counselor and specializes in working with the LGBT community, especially those going through gender transitions. She is transgender herself and provides specialized care for gender and sexuality issues with humans she encounters. She has a background in working with youth and families and has counseled and provided case management to over a thousand families. She has played various roles in part of two youth organizations since 2006, Youth First Texas and North Texas Youth Connection. She was also an engineering teacher for several years and enjoys opening hearts and broadening young minds. She is a licensed massage therapist, but is no longer practicing massage therapy as her energy has been moving solely to counseling for several years.
